Snow White - Endings

The final part in a series of 6 Snow White illustrations I did in 2012. After years of being hated and hunted Snow White finally gets a happy ending. Below is the Queen's reaction.

There are many versions of what happens to the Queen at the end. One has her turn up to Snow White's wedding and die of jealousy. Another has her put on a pair of magic dancing shoes that never stop, which seems to be borrowed from another fairytale. In the Disney version she falls off a cliff. But I'm sure I read a version somewhere where she just smashes the mirror and kind of gives up. I decided to go for that because I didn't want her to die and I think this gives her an opportunity to change. The mirror is what feeds her obsession with appearances, representing society's judgement or her own. I like the idea that at the end of the story she smashes it in rage, but this will ultimately set her on a path where she can rethink her priorities, learn to value herself for more than just beauty and can forget about Snow White and competition.
